Why Humidity Control is Essential?
Before discussing the “how,” it’s vital to understand why humidity is so important. Uncontrolled humidity leads to:
- Material Warping and Curling: The primary problem. When the moisture content of the rigid board and the cover paper are different, or when one side is exposed to a different humidity than the other (e.g., after glueing), the materials will warp or curl as they try to reach equilibrium. This makes assembly impossible and results in a deformed final product.
- Poor Adhesive Performance:
- High Humidity: Prevents water-based glues from drying properly. This can lead to slow production speeds, weak bonds, and the potential for the cover paper to slip or bubble long after production.
- Low Humidity: Can cause glue to dry too quickly, before a proper bond can be formed. It can also make the glue more brittle.
- Printing and Finishing Issues: Unstable humidity can cause the paper to swell or shrink, leading to misregistration (colours not lining up correctly) during printing and finishing processes like foil stamping.
- Static Electricity: Very low humidity increases static electricity, which can cause paper sheets to stick together, leading to feeding problems in machines and attracting dust to the finished product.
- Mould and Mildew: Consistently high humidity creates an environment where mould can grow on finished products.
The Ideal Range: The Target Zone
For most paper and board converting facilities, the ideal environmental conditions are:
- Relative Humidity (RH): 45% to 55%
- Temperature: 20°C to 23°C (68°F to 74°F)
Consistency is key. A stable environment is more important than hitting one exact number. Drastic fluctuations are what cause the most significant problems.
How to Adjust and Control Humidity: A Multi-Faceted Approach
Controlling humidity isn’t about a single machine; it’s about creating a complete environmental management system.
1. Measurement and Monitoring
You cannot control what you don’t measure. This is the first and most crucial step.
- Install Hygrometers: Place digital hygrometers (devices that measure humidity) in key areas: raw material storage, the main production floor, and the finished goods warehouse.
- Data Logging: Use hygrometers that can log data over time. This allows you to see patterns—for example, if humidity spikes at night or during certain weather conditions—and helps you anticipate problems.
2. Environmental Control Systems (HVAC)
The primary method for actively controlling the air is through a robust Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system designed for industrial use.
- Industrial Dehumidifiers: When humidity is too high (common in summer or tropical climates), dehumidifiers are essential.
- Refrigerant Dehumidifiers: Work like a refrigerator, cooling the air to condense moisture out. They are very effective at moderate to high temperatures.
- Desiccant Dehumidifiers: Use a special moisture-absorbing material (desiccant) to pull water from the air. They work well at lower temperatures and can achieve very low humidity levels if needed.
- Industrial Humidifiers: When humidity is too low (common in winter or arid climates), humidifiers add moisture back into the air.
- Atomising or Misting Systems: Release a fine mist of water into the air.
- Steam Injection Systems: Release clean, sterile steam directly into the air ducts of the HVAC system for very precise control.
- Integrated Climate Control System: The best solution is a fully integrated HVAC system that automatically heats, cools, humidifies, and dehumidifies to maintain a pre-set target RH and temperature. This provides the most stable environment.
3. Material Handling and Storage Procedures
How you handle your materials is just as important as the machinery you use.
- Acclimatisation is Crucial: Never move paper or board directly from a cold warehouse into a warm production area (or vice-versa). The materials must be allowed to acclimatise.
- Procedure: Bring the pallet-wrapped materials into the production area and let them sit for 24-48 hours before unwrapping them. This allows the temperature of the material to slowly match the room temperature, preventing condensation and moisture shock that leads to warping.
- Proper Storage:
- Store all paper and board on pallets, never directly on the floor.
- Keep materials in their original protective wrapping for as long as possible.
- Store materials away from outside walls, doorways, and vents where temperature and humidity fluctuate the most.
4. Process-Specific Adjustments
- Control Glue Application: Ensure your glueing machines apply a thin, consistent layer of adhesive. Applying too much glue introduces excessive moisture into the board, guaranteeing warping.
- Controlled Drying: After glueing and wrapping, some boxes may benefit from being passed through a short, low-temperature drying tunnel or stored in a specific drying room with controlled airflow to ensure the glue sets properly and evenly.
